Timberframe manufacturing

The following pictures present the manufacturing of a small structure.

Making a structure always begins by creating a good set of drawings. Once the customer has accepted the proposed design, we can start the manufacturing.

By following our precise drawings, the position of the mortises are marked on the beams.

We dig a mortise by using the chain mortiser.

It is often necessary to ajust the size of the mortise with a framing chisel.

The tenons are also adjusted with a good precision in order to create a tight joint. We try to avoid cutting the joints too precisely since it makes them difficult to assemble.

We usualy try the joints to see how they fit.

The peg holes are drilled at the very end when all the joints are well adjusted. The corresponding holes in the tenons are drilled with a slight offset to make a very tight joint. We call this technique "draw boring".

Here is the final result. Beautiful! To raise a typical structure, we usualy use a crane. For small structure like this one, a boom truck is enough.
